Situated to the north of Greece the land of Thrace features in Ancient History from approximately 500BC to 100BC. Thrace came into contact with Greece, Persia, the Scythians, and Rome. As mercenaries or as allies the Thracians fought as superb light or medium infantry and light cavalry from the time of the Persian invasions until the defeat of the last Successor states of Alexander. They evolved from tribal warriors in traditional fox skin caps and patterned cloaks, into regular, well-armed and disciplined troops to hire to the Greek city states and Alexander and his Successors.
